Welland Primary School

Through competitive tender Neal R Shipley & Co were appointed as principal contractor at Welland Primary School to provide a meticulous school expansion to accommodate the growing student population and enhance the school's facilities. Construction took place across various locations within the school boundary and within in a live school environment. The project required the utilisation of a neighbouring parish council playing field to provide access to the rear of the school site, whilst the safety and protection of school pupils and staff were given particular emphasis throughout the construction process.

The project involved the delivery of three separate extensions: a single-storey early years classroom extension, a two-storey classroom block extension, and a hall extension. Additionally, a school kitchen, WC block, and corridor extensions were constructed to link two pre-existing school buildings.

Strict safeguarding measures were implemented throughout the construction phase to facilitate working within a live school environment. This included clear signage, designated construction areas, and restricted access to both existing school elements and dedicated construction zones. The team coordinated closely with the school administration to ensure minimal disruptions to the school's operations and to prioritise the safety of the students and staff.

Phased sectional completion was implemented to ensure that each extension was delivered in a timely manner and could be occupied upon such phased completion. The successful completion of the project resulted in significant capacity and access improvements to school, whilst the hall extension and refurbishment of the existing space provided a larger and more functional area for school activities. The single-storey early years classroom extension, with its internal ramped corridor, improved accessibility and connectivity within the multi-level existing school building, whereas the two-storey classroom block extension added much-needed classroom space, and the school kitchen, WC, and corridor extension enhanced the functionality and connectivity of the school buildings.

Overall the successful delivery of this project resulted in the providing of an enhanced and conducive learning environment for the students.
